Sexual Sustainability for Women with SCIs
In this presentation Dr. Alexander will provide an overview of all of the issues that can impact sexuality in women with SCIs. From childhood throughout life there are emotional issues and physical issues that can affect sexuality for everyone. She will also discuss the effects of specific levels of SCI on women’s arousal and how other medical concerns and commonly prescribed medications for persons with SCIs can affect sexual response. She will emphasize the importance of communication and mindfulness during sexual activity and will discuss ways to improve sexual responsiveness throughout the lifespan.
About Dr. Marcalee Alexander
Marcalee Alexander, MD is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist. Since 1990, she has studied sexuality and SCI, performing extensive laboratory based research in humans with SCI to understand the impact of injuries on sexual response. She recently wrote the book: Sexual Sustainability: A guide to having-a great sex life with a spinal cord disorder which is now also available in Spanish. She recently developed a YouTube channel, Sustain Our Abilities, in conjunction with volunteers around the world to make education about disability concerns available without borders. Here, a series about sexuality and disability is being planned.
